Secondhand Monsters

Continuing down the rabbit hole

The night started with everyone meeting at Praetorian Security, and discussing plans for the night. After the meeting we all went to St. Bridgid’s church to meet with Father Verity in regards to a letter he sent Neala. He explained that Benjamin was safe and he was holding Neala’s heart in particular because it gave him leverage against her. He discussed his distaste for Benjamin’s teachings and wants her to ‘reform’.

After the meeting a decapitated corpse was found in Chinatown and investigations began in regards to that, leading us to the culprit (the name of which I didn’t write down).

We hosted a 4th of July party for mid level mob bosses and the like.

Neala grew tired of the party and left, followed by Thaddeus. Midway through the walk Neala got a phone call from Thaddeus’ phone (which he didn’t know had been stolen) and that call led them to a Karaoke bar where Thaddeus put on a remarkable performance and he and Neala drank Sake until they were ill and drunk.

The next night we met a fellow named Sam at the park and he explained Camarilla introductions and how to go about them, giving each member of our group a way to get ahold of someone to vouch for us so we could get our foot in the door with the Camarilla and begin working toward being recognized as something other than target practice.

Session One: Weird(er)

The first evening started off with a fire in the building Thaddeus and Jake used as a haven. At first glance this appeared to be a mechanical malfunction but it seems we all suspect more. If we have any idea who was behind it, no one said so. During a meeting at the warehouse, we came across a couple of ghouls who belonged to an unknown Kindred. And by “came across” I mean Thaddeus shot one and Jake incapacitated the other. We proceeded to take them to a not-so-secure location and found out that they were working for a Father Daniel Verity and were sent to get video of Neela. Some of their guys showed up requesting to take their men back. Jake was able to sneak a ride back to an abandoned church (St. Bishop, i think). [Note: St. Brigid]

On the second night things got weird(er). Thaddeus seems to be having a bit of a fungus problem with his vehicles. He claims not to know what’s causing it but seems to get more irritated with his imaginary friends when it happens. Neela was overcome with the desire to first head north to a ladies room and then south to a mexican revival. In both places she found clay jars which contained notes regarding hope for her and her sire, Benjamin. One the way home from the church we noticed we were being followed and after some questioning, found out it was Father Verity who was leaving the jars. Jae has been working on getting us in with the Camarilla by meeting with Devon and is planning a party for high society.

The Story So Far

Until 2008, San Francisco was a Camarilla city – a counterpoint to the long-standing Anarch freehold of Los Angeles far to the south, and the last strong Camarilla city before Oregon and then Washington and then Sabbat and Garou-dominated Canada.

The combination of culture, art and finance meant that Toreador and Ventrue felt right at home. The weirdness was rumored to attract more than the city’s fair share of Malkavians and wandering Caitiff.

The events that dominated recent history for the city were what was described as the Summer of Love and Blood in 2004. During that summer, the Ravnos who were in the city (more than anyone thought likely, mostly living in Berkeley and parts of Oakland) went wild and started attacking other kindred and, if stories are true, diablerizing them. It was the biggest threat to the Masquerade in a long time, and only through a concerted effort among many of the Camarilla elders, like Suzanne Cohen, was the Masquerade maintained at all.

The Prince at the time, Cedric Antonio, already a traditionalist, became downright draconian, hunting or driving out remaining Ravnos and then enacting a number of new policies for the city aimed at keeping closer tabs on the kindred there.

It took four years for the Anarch uprising to come to fruition. Quietly supported by Giovanni and Setites very interested in a free-er city for them to function in, many Caitiff, Brujah and Malkavians overthrew Prince Cedric and his minions, driving them off and declaring San Francisco and surrounding cities as an Anarch Free State, similar to Los Angeles in the south (which, ironically, had recently fallen to the Sabbat).

This lasted for another four years, until the Camarilla returned in force. Supported by archons like Leslie Whitaker working openly and others working in secret, the leadership of the independent clans in the city was wiped out along with any Anarch leaders who didn’t flee. Cedric Antonio returned to “his” city, only to find that there is already a new Prince in place, Sarah Anne Winder, who happens to have the full support of the other elders in the city.

Most of the new Camarilla residents are laying low, as vampires are wont to do, but a few stand out a bit for those who know what to look for. Leslie Whitaker remains in the city and is working at rounding up any remaining resistance against Camarilla rule. Suzanne Cohen has a reputation from before the uprising, and while not highly political, is very likely the new Primogen by dint of being by far the elder member of her clan in the city.

The new Sheriff of the city is named Clyde, though no one can vouch for what exactly he looks like. V-Jack was in the vanguard of the Camarilla attack on the city, and he is too large to hide effectively. If he were interested, the Brujah might even want him for a leader, inasmuch as they have leaders. Speaking of Brujah, Rash was one of the Anarchs who publicly accepted the Prince’s offer to rejoin the Camarilla, be acknowledged in the city, as long as hostilities ended. He is not very popular for that choice on any side.

Lastly, Devon Ross is a vampire who toys with mortal fame. Ta is known primarily by reputation (being “post gender”, Devon prefers that people use the non-gendered pronoun “ta”), and can be seen sometimes at the most exclusive clubs in the city.

As was mentioned previously, the leadership of the independent clans and Anarchs who ran the city for four years is pretty much wiped out. Technically, Benjamin Graham is MIA, but it is a good guess to presume he is at best in torpor. There are rumors that some Giovanni may remain, hidden in the city, but they have no known leadership. The Ravnos no longer have a significant presence anywhere, and what few Assamites there might be have either departed, are awaiting payment from the Camarilla for helping to take the city, or are hiding out in the East Bay.

Welcome to your Adventure Log!
A blog for your campaign

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
